Among all transportation measures, Chengdu¡¯s advanced aviation facilities can be said to be its strongest selling point in its transformation to an emerging high-tech manufacturing center in China.

In 2006, the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, 16 km away from downtown ranked sixth both in terms of passenger and freight turnovers. Considering there are two airports in Shanghai, namely Pudong and Hongqiao, Chengdu is China¡¯s fifth largest aviation hub.

In 2006, passenger turnovers in Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport reached 16.3 million, far exceeding Chongqing, Xi¡¯an and Wuhan, its major competitors in Central and Western China. In 2006, its freight turnover reached 0.295 million tons, 17.7% higher than 2005.

Currently, Chengdu is connected to 70 Chinese cities and 24 foreign cities through airways. To further boost its status as aviation hub in Central and Western China, the construction of the second runway is expected to start before the end of 2007.
